Maestro Robert Raines, a mentor, a friend…you’ll be missed

On April 16, 2011, Maestro Robert Raines of the Brampton Symphony Orchestra passed away losing his battle with cancer. It was indeed a sad news to everyone who knew him, including myself. I have had the chance to meet Maestro in September 2007 when I auditioned (thru the recommendation of BSO’s Operations Manager, Leona Davidson). That was then my most memorable moment when he asked me, after the audition, if I will be interested to take part on their November 2007 concert at the Rose Theatre. Little that I know that many more performances with the BSO followed suit. He even named me “BSO’s Little Princess”, I was small then…(now I have grown more inches but he still called me his Little Princess )

There were many memories, words of encouragement and guidance that he unselfishly shared. For these, I will be forever grateful and he will be missed so dearly.

Here was an email that I kept all these years (few days after my first performance with the Brampton Symphony Orchestra. I know he wouldn’t like to be put into a spotlight but I am very proud of him):

” Dear Joe, Arlene and of course Princess Jasmine,
I feel so deeply honoured to know you and thank you for allowing Jasmine to be a beacon of light hope and inspiration to other young people (and our general audience) by performing with the Brampton Symphony Orchestra. I am constantly surrounded with talent both young and mature, with people who have worked hard to achieve success. But every so often, one is humbled before a God given voice that defies the reason for its existence at such a young age. Jasmine possesses such a gift. I will do all I can to join with you in fostering her talent and once again express my appreciation for your loving support of Brampton’s little Princess and the Brampton Symphony Orchestra. And yes, we have Leona to thank for bringing this young treasure to my attention.

Hello all,

Come watch the 4th Annual “Art for the Arts Valentine Gala Concert” on Sunday, Feb 13, 2011 at the Rose Theatre, 1 Theatre Lane, Brampton, Ontario, Canada. It features few tenors, sopranos and vocalists including myself and good friend Roy Tugbang. This is my third participation on the said concert.
